West Hartford Continuing and Summer Education
offers tuition-based summer academic and enrichment options for pre-K thru
grade 1 students, and middle thru high school students. Popular Continuing and Summer Education programs
are outlined below. This year, select English and Science courses may be offered via a blended learning platform which consists of classroom-based instruction and online/virtual learning. Summer Jazz Jam continues to be popular offerings for students entering grades 6-9. Chinese Language and Culture Summer Blast is a new one-week summer program for students entering grades 6-9 who want to develop both speaking and writing abilities, including, the understanding of Chinese culture. An authentic field experience is included in this exciting week-long program.
Get
Ready At Summer Pre-School (G.R.A.S.P.) is a summer school offering for
children entering kindergarten in the fall. The program emphasizes
experiences in early learning skills including learning to pay attention,
follow instructions, taking turns, and completing tasks. Children enjoy music
and art projects and experience activities designed to improve small and large
motor coordination. This program runs Monday - Thursday, and there is no school on July 4.
Moving
On Up is a great way to get ready for first grade.
Children experience reading, math, science and listening skills.
Activities include puppetry, crafts, singing, dancing and videos. This program runs Monday - Thursday, and there is no school on July 4.
Summer
Fun for Preschoolers offer creative summer-fun activities which include a variety of
learning, outdoor, and nature experiences where sensory, motor, and language
skills will be specifically designed to meet the developmental needs of this
population of young children ages 3-5. This program runs Monday - Thursday, and there is no school on July 4.
Summer Jazz Jam returns as a two-week jazz ensemble program for students entering grades 6, 7, 8 and 9 and performing on traditional big band instruments (saxophone, clarinet, flute, trombone, trumpet, bass, piano, guitar, drum set). This is a great opportunity for students to improve their jazz chops, as soloists and ensemble players, and all student are encouraged to take part. There is no school on July 4.
The West Hartford Inter-district Summer High School offers 30 courses for "get ahead" credit; for skills development; credit
recovery and for enrichment experiences. The summer high school also
offers a variety of non-credit offerings for middle school students.

Collaborating Towns
Once again the West Hartford Inter-district Summer High School will be joined by several other towns. In addition to the residents of Bloomfield, Hartford and West Hartford, the residents from the following towns pay the resident, rather than the non-resident rate, for all programs: Avon, Berlin, Enfield, Farmington Glastonbury, Granby, Newington, Region 10: Burlington/ Harwinton, Rocky Hill, South Windsor, Simsbury, Wethersfield, and Windsor. Residents from all other towns are welcome at the non-resident rate.
Course Cancellation Policy
Specific courses may be modified or cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. Decisions on the cancellation of a course due to insufficient enrollment may be made up to 2 days prior to the start of the course and a full refund would be granted.
